Full payment for full courses (8 students registered) must be made at least one week prior to the start of a course. Listed prices are for the current session and are subject to change in the future. The last 15 minutes of all classes are scheduled for wrap-up and clean-up. Potters are responsible to clean (and dry and put away - always clean with a wet cloth to keep dust to a minimum) their work spaces, equipment and tools before their class ends.
Sandpaper will be made available to students ONLY for use outside the building.
Students are required to bring and change into clean shoes for the studio. Please also brings clothes that can tolerate the mess of wild creativity. Due to safety concerns, hair must be tied back, finger nails should be neatly trimmed and all jewelry should be removed.
Class payments are not refundable but we will make every effort to reschedule up to two classes per student per session where room is available. Requests for rescheduling classes must be made at least 48 hours before the canceled class.
Each student is supplied with all the tools they need and half of a block of clay. Extra clay is available for especially productive students at a price of $30 per half block. Glazing and firing of each student’s first piece is included in the price of the course. Glazing and firing for extra pieces is $10 or $20, depending on the size of the piece. All provided clay and artwork are to be used exclusively during studio sessions: taking clay or pieces home before the end of the six-week session is not permitted. Likewise, all tools and equipment are the property of Chromatic Earth Pottery and cannot be borrowed for use outside of the studio.
Work will only be fired if it is totally dry (for first firing) and clear of glaze on the bottom (for second firing).
The firing of pieces made by class participants take priority in our kiln scheduling. Glazing and firing of each student’s first piece is included in the price of the course. Glazing and firing for extra pieces is $10 or $20, depending on the size of the piece. Those wishing to rent our kiln need to realize that we may not fire their pieces in as timely a manner as we normally do for our students.
Any damage to the kiln furniture, including shelving or posts, due to misuse of glazes/clay will be the responsibility of the maker and a replacement fee will apply.
The owner/instructor is experienced in operating kilns and keeps her kilns in excellent working operation. We make every effort to ensure the viability of your art but broken pieces are a normal part of the potter’s life. We are not responsible should your art suffer damage in the kiln. Even the most experienced potters are not immune to damaged art in the kiln but, please remember, we are here for the experience of learning, not for the final product. Broken pieces are not grounds for a refund. There are no guarantees in ceramics.
To ensure the timely revealing/returning of pieces, please label all artwork at the bottom of each piece. Unlabeled items will not be fired and may be disposed of. Pieces not picked up within one month of the “revelation” date may also be disposed of or donated. Personal items left in the studio will be held onto for no more than one month before being donated.
This building is multiple floors. There is an entrance to 388 Carlaw Ave. on Carlaw Ave. and signs will be posted to assist in your significant travel from that entrance to our studio. However, if you are driving, it is far easier to access our space by turning west off of Carlaw on a little “no exit” paved side road about 3 meters north of Dundas St.. Once this is negotiated, travel about 100 meters down the paved side road and turn right onto the first stone road you come to. Approximately 2/3 of the way down the building you will see signs for Chromatic Earth Pottery.
Once you leave street level and get to the main level, access to our studio is from a door on the main floor and then up approximately 15 steps. We are sorry we are not able to offer full accessibility to all patrons. There may also be a cat gate at the top of the stairs … please close this behind you. The studio itself is all on one floor.
There is a small washroom in the studio that needs to be reserved for studio employees. We provide keys to the building’s many washrooms for anyone who needs them.
Due to the nature of work with clay, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows a range of movement.
