6-week Course, starting Wednesday, April 9.

This course is intended for those who already have significant ceramics experience, including both hand-building and wheel-throwing. Participants will deepen their basic skills and be introduced to more intricate surface decorations and treatments, new colour techniques and pattern designs, and learn to throw "off the hump".  Throwing "Big" will also be introduced and, as always at Chromatic Earth Pottery, participants will also be encouraged towards - and be assisted with - creating art pieces that speak to them personally.

Chromatic Earth Pottery proudly introduces guest instructor, Thomas Bollmann, who will lead all six of these advanced classes.  Thomas Bollmann is a ceramicist, photographer and educator whose exposure to artists and designers in his youth became the foundation of his interest in contemporary art.  His interest in layering textural components through the use of slips adds tactility to his works, which play with weightiness, depth, and form. Thomas' produces for a truly international client-base and his iconic and one-of-a-kind pieces stimulate great customer loyalty and repeat business.

Unlike our basic registered classes, this advanced class will be comprised of six weekly classes (one class per week at the same time for 6 continuous weeks, usually excepting holidays). These classes are recommended for adults.

Each class is scheduled for 2-1/2 hours (with the last 15 minutes scheduled for wrap and clean-up). One instructor and all materials are provided and participants make pieces by "throwing" on the wheel and/or through hand-building. Pieces are typically glaze-fired in our kiln within one month of being completely and participants may arrange for artwork pickup after that time.

We strive to maintain an intimate setting - and there is a comfortable seating area (and, often, Persian tea) for art breaks - and therefore cap the group size at a maximum of 8 individuals.

We understand that scheduling conflicts arise in the crazy and stressful outside world and therefore offer makeup classes wherever their is availability. Missed classes should, however, be made up during the session in which they occur, which will typically be difficult with this class as we will typically only run one intermediate class per session. Make-up slots are distributed on a "first-come-first-serve" basis and are available not only to those who have registered for classes but also to those coming on an "ad-hoc" basis. A makeup class will only be awarded if Chromatic Earth Pottery is informed of the missed class at least 5 hours before the class is scheduled to start. Only one make-up class is permitted per participant per session.

Each student is supplied with all the tools they need and 8 inches of a block of clay. Glazing and firing are included for pieces made from that initial amount of clay. Extra clay is available for especially productive students at a price of $40 per 1/3 block ( plus HST), with glazing and firing of additional pieces costing $10 or $20 (depending on the size of the piece). All provided clay and artwork are to be worked on exclusively during studio sessions: taking clay or pieces home before the end of the four-week session is not permitted. Likewise, all tools and equipment are the property of Chromatic Earth Pottery and cannot be borrowed for use outside of the studio.
